Scary netflix movies 202112/19/2023 ![]() ![]() Perhaps one of Aftermath’s greatest strengths however is the examination of a failing relationship, with the eerie occurrences not just being used for scares but amplifying the heartbreak of couples’ counselling and potential affairs. You can’t beat a good old-fashioned haunted house story, and Aftermath adds to the creepiness by reportedly being based on a true story. However, Natalie begins to realise why the property was so cheap after hearing disturbing noises and finding unexplained markings around the house – if only someone would believe her. Natalie and Kevin are a couple on the brink of breaking up who in a last-ditch effort to save their relationship move in together after being offered an amazing deal for a house. Moving into a new house that turns out to be haunted is one of the oldest tricks in the book, but Aftermath keeps things fresh by adding the horror of a collapsing relationship also. Baumeister is the star performer here, but she has excellent support from Legends of Tomorrow actor Dominic Purcell and Castlevania‘s Graham McTavish. However, it’s a family drama at heart – showcasing the lengths a mother will go to to protect her child from danger, even when that includes herself. However, it’s the terrorists who should be worried, as Nadja unleashes a monstrous secret to protect her young son – launching a tense game of cat-and-mouse in the pressurised cabin as the clock ticks down to sunrise…įlying straight to the no.1 spot on Netflix’s top ten on release, Blood Red Sky takes inspiration from horror hits such as Train to Busan and From Dusk Till Dawn to deliver a claustrophobic and high stakes thriller in a confined environment, with danger coming from vampires, terrorists, a potential plane crash and even sunlight. ![]() The German horror follows Nadja (Peri Baumeister), a mysteriously ill woman who boards a transatlantic flight to New York which gets hijacked by terrorists. Not one for those with a fear of flying – or vampires for that matter – Blood Red Sky has a similar premise to the previously mentioned Snakes on a Plane, but swaps out the campy fun for a deadly serious and delightfully gory thrill-ride, as well as exchanging snakes for equally bitey vampires. Family fun with the usual life lessons, wrapped up in a creative horror-fantasy perfect for older kids. It helps that Krysten Ritter (Marvel’s Jessica Jones) is on scene-stealing form here, just chilling enough in her interpretation of witch Natacha without going far enough to induce nightmares. ![]() Nightbooks may not be the most unpredictable film out there, but makes an excellent first foray into horror for young viewers – and may even inspire them to read the book. However after an evil witch kidnaps him and demands a new spine-tingling tale every night, Alex must embrace what makes him unique in order to save himself and fellow prisoner Yasmin. Based on the children’s book of the same name by JA White, Nightbooks follows Alex, a young boy from New York with a talent for writing scary stories who gives up his hobby after being teased. A horror option for all the family – or just the faint of heart – Nightbooks is proof that scary films don’t necessarily need a high age rating for a chillingly good time. ![]()

The problems may have stemmed from Max creating an entirely new app, rather than simply renaming its existing one, and many subscribers were displeased, saying they couldn’t log in or that the app had completely crashed. "HBO Max, now rebranded as Max, had a less-than-ideal launch on Tuesday, with many subscribers reporting ongoing issues with the app. Some HBO Max subscribers received a "not available in your region" message after the company launched its" So in the middle of the movie ( Cityslickers in one example, Donovan's Reef in the other) suddenly there's subitles and everyone is talking in English for a bit."HBO's Max Rebrand Launch Didn't Go as Planned. On the funnier side, I had funny moments with both Netflix and Prime where they reinserted scenes that hadn't been in the original German broadcast versions and had hence not been dubbed over with German dialogue. I literally watched the movie with the remote in hand. I also had trouble with the audio mixing for Jurassic Park on Prime that I don't remember the movie having on prior viewings, as in, the dialogue was low enough I had to turn the volume up, but the action stuff like dinosaurs roaring or stuff crashing into each other being so loud I had to turn the volume back down. Hence putting subtitles on and then turning them off just for that scene, which doesn't really help a movie to flow. I was actually for a hot second thinking, wow I didn't remember this bold narrative choice of having them speak in their made up language untranslated for this mainstream blockbuster, until my mom asked why we couldn't tell what they were saying and I was like. Watched Men in Black on Netflix with my mom recently, and the aliens in the restaurant scene start talking to each other. Then those same people go out and watch other non-subbed foreign bits and assume the same thing has happened lol. They're so expressive that you don't actually need subtitles all that much IMO, but I remember lots of comments on every D9 thread basically saying "wait that was mean to be subbed?". The "wait this is meant to have subtitles" one that comes up the most is District 9, for the Prawn bits. This is often quite a funny way of seeing when someone's pirated a movie - since lots of people end up seeing films that didn't have subs baked into the file, they go ahead and assume that every moment in a foreign language should have subs and their copy is defective / deficient. Not at OP here but more a general point I see about subs on Reddit sometimes: Based on your post I don’t think the movie put subs in for those Spanish lines. Tarantino chose subs there and I'm glad.Īlso I really wish I was bilingual and I think if you were and could understand both languages in a film that would be so cool, like a special achievement unlock.īut a lot of times for a language that the main character wouldn’t understand they don’t provide a translation. ![]() A contrasting example would be the intro to Inglorious Basterds: that would have been pretty lame to be completely in the dark on all dialouge. I kinda like the "silent film" throwback in acting style where as a viewer you really hone in on body language and voice inflection instead of simply understanding each sentence completely. I just rewatched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid recently and this technique was utilized well in it. Obviously the director does has to make that decision intentionally though, because I'm not trying to miss important exposition or details from a language gap. I personally like when a movie can use language barriers authentically and artistically to create more mystery. WELP! Turns out, these giant words covering the screen are not translation for the Spanish dialogue. Ok, fine it’s whatever, lets rewind and hit play. It’s not my personal choice, and wouldnt have been too big a deal, but these captions end up taking up half the screen, with no sizing options available! When the dialogue shows up the first time, we realize the subtitles are absent (no original hardcode), so we flip on subs, only to realize that they’re the super descriptive, closed caption kind. There’s quite a bit of Spanish in the film of course. ![]() I Was stoked to watch Once Upon a Time In Mexico tonight, but plans fell through. It’s a terrible example to set and a horrible influence on one’s fans. This is problematic–artists such as A$AP Yams, Lil Peep, and Fredo Santana have died after dealing with drug abuse. Artists such as Future, Migos, Desiigner, and 21 Savage have become rich and famous in spite of their lyrically incomprehensible deliveries. To quote a tweet I saw the other day: “Every time I remember that Lil Pump is a 17–year–old who got rich and famous for saying ‘Gucci gang’ for three minutes, I have to remind myself that life is a meaningless simulation in order to calm down.” Yes, that last part might be a little dark and hyperbolic, but the point remains the same.Īs I struggle to listen to “Gucci Gang,” I cringe at Pump’s inability to sound coherent. ![]() Wire drawdown definition12/18/2023 ![]() Debit transactions can also be returned because of various other reasons, including insufficient funds, for up to two business days.
